Bridge wall tilts, MC team inspects

Ludhiana : Tilting of about 150-foot parapet wall at Jagraon bridge on the road coming from Vishvakarma Chowk has been making residents worry about a collapse. The municipal corporation has also taken note of this. Officials said that though the wall needed reconstruction, it did not pose any danger to the bridge.  A team of the MC officials headed by the executive engineer (projects) HS Khosa visited the spot on Saturday morning following a complaint in this regard. Later, senior deputy mayor Praveen Kumar Bansal also inspected the spot and discussed the problem with officials. "The parapet wall has tilted, but the retaining wall and the bases of the bridge are absolutely fine," said Khosa. He added, "The wall tilted as people have been dumping garbage at its base and that stopped the water's flow in the drainage channels. Also, rats started feeding on the garbage and turned the wall hollow." However Khosa could not give a reply as to why corporation workers failed to clear the garbage while cleaning the bridge. "The residents here are to be blamed for this mess as they do not stop throwing rubbish,?? he said. Bansal said that the work for parapet walls would start from Monday. ??Once the side walls are reconstructed we will either make the slopes concrete or will carry out landscaping here, which would give a better look to the bridge as well," he added.
