Transporters to get relief till Jan 31

Ludhiana  : The decision was taken after the transport union started threatening the government that it go on an indefinite strike. Notably, various transport unions have taken the unanimous decision that they would not bow down to the Punjab government regarding installation of speed governors in commercial vehicles. Union members told government officials that speed governors had failed in New Delhi, Kerala and Gujarat, and would not be popular in the city either.  The union had also questioned the modalities for the installation of speed governors saying the limit of 30kmph would not allow for transport in hilly areas. Its members had also complained about the cost of the mechanism, which started at Rs 13,500. Baldev Singh, president, All Tempo Welfare Association of Punjab (ATWAP), said government had given temporary relief, but this attitude of harassing transporters would lead to trouble.  Experts of the transport industry feel that the installation of the speed governor will not solve the problem of road accidents. They said as the drivers would control the speed in the end, the effect of the speed governors would not amount to much.
