Senior Secondary School on 6 Acre in Machhiwara to Honour Guru Gobind Singh Disciples Gani Khan and Nabi Khan

Fatehgarh Sahib : The SGPC has decided to set up a senior secondary school in Machhiwara near Samrala in Ludhiana district and name it after two Muslims, Gani Khan and Nabi Khan, who stood by the tenth Sikh master, Guru Gobind Singh, in his hour of crisis. Disclosing this on Monday after visiting the school site and holding a meeting with Samrala MLA Jagjivan Singh Kheernia, Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia, director, education, SGPC, said the school would be set up over 6 acres of land near Gurdwara Charankamal Sahib. He said when Guru Gobind Singh, after leaving the Chamkaur Sahib fort, reached Machhiwara, Nabi Khan and Gani Khan gave him shelter and saved him from the Mughal army. They had termed Guru Gobind Singh as “ucch da peer“. Walia said the coeducational school would provide quality education to students of Machhiwara and about 60 villages in the area. The SGPC is running 65 schools and 35 colleges. He said the setting up of the directorate of education was a big achievement for the SGPC, which was making relentless efforts to tie up with foreign universities and streamline the working of its colleges. Walia said the SGPC had opened a new vista of opportunities for higher education for students of SGPC-run colleges by signing an MoU with Sheriden College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, Oakville.
The University of Waikato, a leading university in New Zealand, has expressed keen interest in admitting meritorious scholars from SGPC-run institutions in various Ph.D programmes and has also offered them work permits so that they could also bring their spouses along, he added. Dr Walia said SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar had given permission for the opening of new schools and colleges and the SGPC directorate of education was making all efforts to open educational institutions at all important places.
